Don’t forget: Stay Right, Pass Left, Buckle Up and WATCH THOSE MIRRORS! And adjust the mirrors so that you don’t have to lean way over to make sure of what you are seeing and therefore stop watching the road ahead! Be smooooth! ANTICIPATE! Keep your wits about you. Stay alert! Don’t watch just the car in front of you, look as far down the road as you can--- ANTICIPATE—try to see if something is developing way up ahead that you might have to avoid. Always look the ball into your glove. PLAN AHEAD. Speeding should be reserved for places like Summit Point and VIR!

Yes, I do know that the previous section has gotten a tad extended, but the propositions it embodies are reasonable and prudent. Many other drivers have a tendency to ‘drive stupid’, so to paraphrase what the old sergeant used to say," Be vigilant out there".

Don’t forget [or if you’re new to the Club]: We have a good selection of Regalia available to help you show your fealty to the Club and your ebullience for your Volvo. Check with Ray Parsons or Frank Mackison for availability and prices of the sundry items. These items will also be available, in limited quantities, at most meetings and at other slyly selected venues.

Speaking of visits---it would appear that, unless otherwise noted, you might plan on attending Club meeting at Martens Volvo Service Center in Bethesda, MD most months. Exceptions, when made, will be announced early enough [hopefully] to help you adjust your compass. If you have Web access, check the Site.
Has anyone else seen the PURINA ad on TV featuring an 1800? Or The MC ad with the 245? The 122s ‘spot’ for the Post Office has stopped being aired, I guess.
Page 172 of the August 2000 issue of Classic & Sports Car. Review of a ‘Swede Chariot’ by Jon Pressnell. All you need to know---find a copy and check it out! There’s also a photo that John Hamilton will enjoy on page 24! That’s still one of the better all-around automotive magazines you will find. Mostly European in scope, but that is understandable.

GM is rumored to have OK’d SAAB’s plan to resurrect the wonderful SONNET, their sports car from the 1960s and 1970s [Ed Tonat is delighted!]; maybe FORD will decide that Volvo ought to bring out a new version of the 1800? One can only hope!

Love the Chevy ads on TV telling you that you can drive a Monte Carlo, just like Jeff Gordon’s. I didn’t know that he races a FWD V6. About the same as those Taurus coupes driven by Rusty Wallace, et al. Just try and find one of those at your nearest Ford emporium.

Racy Volvos Dept.! Charles Broring, Steve Monson, John DePlanque, Sam Moore, Chris Plucker, and WVCs Jim Stem are all actively campaigning 142 Volvos in the SCCA MARRS series! Go see them in ITB Class at either VIR or over at Summit Point. In fact, there’s a good chance most of them will be at Summit Point on Sept. 2-4 for the next MARRS races! That’s an excellent track and it really isn’t THAT far away. They are continuing a Volvo tradition! Go on out and CHEER them on! Volvos Rule!

Fun Site! If you’d like to drive a genuine Formula 1 race car, check out the Web Site WWW.adren-a-line.com. Of course, you have to travel to Europe to do this, but what the heck! It’s only money! Imagine driving at Spa in a 1998 Benetton F1! 0-120 in 5 SECONDS! [Makes you wonder what they do the quarter in, heh?]

I understand the pubs serve Guinness! What a concept! Should be two very busy weeks! I can’t wait!

Bob Orr had to clean and reset the throttle switch on the 745T the other day. It would stick and ‘kill’ the engine when you came to a stop. Most embarrassing, especially on 495 [AKA the road from hell]. The switch was fine, just dirty. Best advice is to check the throttle switch every 30K or so. Additives in gas have no affect: the switch only controls airflow. So save your money. Runs fine now, snaps and pops a bit around 50 MPH in 4OD, but it’s not annoying. Not to me, at least!

1971 1800E 180K, Body needs work, but engine and trans [4 speed+OD] are excellent. Rocker panels and front portion of rear fenders are rusty. Have original alloy wheels, inc. spare. Interior very good, except front seats and top of dash. Everything works, except AC that needs to be charged/serviced. Documentation includes original owner’s manual and service records. 1986 740GLE Gold, MANY NEW parts, inc. rack and pinion, alternator. Cloth seats were protected with sheepskins for the entire 270K, so they look like new. 1999 DIY Programme By Alan Marsh

The Current Schedule! Once again the Washington area Volvo dealers have provided great support for this year’s DIY programme and we thank them very much. We currently have the following five sessions on our schedule:

August 7: Don Beyer Volvo, Falls Church

October 9: Herb Gordon Volvo, Silver Spring

November 20: Martens Volvo, Bethesda

This year we’ll be spreading the work and the glory to additional Club members. We’re instituting an OD concept, in which an individual WVC member will be in charge of [only] one specific DIY session and will be responsible for all the details for that DIY. I’ll remain as the overall 1999 DIY programme ‘czar’ and will be available to coach as much or as little as needed. We hope to attract some new energy to this highly successful Club activity. We may even institute an internal Club competition for the best event. Let me know if you’d be interested in serving as OD, in assisting, or if you have a great idea for a DIY. The best way is to drop me a note at the address on the masthead.

We are looking to make a few changes this year, especially to attract new participants. We thought we had been publicizing the fact that we welcome newcomer, but we learned last year that we weren’t coming across as well as we thought. Clearly we want to encourage members to use these sessions to learn how to care for their Volvos and we are happy to instruct the basics, like changing wiper blades, as well as assist in more advanced maintenance procedures. We also wish to attract more of our women members. The ladies who participated in the 1998 sessions added a certain class to the group and, without fail, said that they were happy that they had attended. We are considering having one of our sessions this year set up primarily with our female membership in mind. Let us know if you like such a concept.

Current Events

LAST MONTH:

Martens Volvo, in the person of Richard Moak, opened their doors for our July meeting. Not our most crowded meeting, but one of our more pleasant. Ray Parsons was not able to attend, so John Switzer ran the proceedings.

Little news, majority seemed in favor of a summer picnic, so we shall explore the concept. Alan Marsh’s DIY program is quite popular and people were urged to sign up quickly when they get word of new locations to be sure they can get a spot.

Ken Hamilton regaled us with stories of his latest Swedish adventures. Ken is eyeing the newest V70 Xcountry. It would appear that he has been tempted to move up!

We spent a good portion of the meeting discussing upgrades to the 700/900 series cars. These boxy beauties have massive potential and can be easily modified and turned into real performers. Plus, they are invisible. So to speak.

Around 9 PM, we took mercy on Richard and allowed him to close down the facility. We are nothing if not kind.

NEXT MONTH: note location!

This meeting will again be at MARTENS. We are hoping that Ray Parsons will be in the country so that he can run the Meeting and bring the door prizes [we have a coupla really neat prizes still in the WVC vaults and we need to make room for more ‘stuff’ so these prizes have to go!]

The weekend before is the VSA Meet, so there should be a report and maybe pictures to pass around. We want you to see what you’ve missed!

A special guest is not out of the question, depending on schedules, so come and join us.
