Volvamus Excerpts - November 1998
BITS AND PIECES:
- Dont forget: Stay Right, Pass Left, Buckle Up
and WATCH THOSE MIRRORS! And adjust the mirrors so that you dont have to lean
way over to make sure of what you are seeing and stop watching the road ahead! Be
smooooth! Many drivers dont understand how a merge lane is supposed to be used;
you dont HAVE to stop. Keep your wits about you. Allow a merger in
if you can, it doesnt cost that much time. Stay alert! AWD does NOT
help on black ice! Bear in mind that sometimes people on pedal-powered
machines feel exempt from the laws of applied mathematics because they have a helmet on.
Right on Red with cautionstop first and look, unlike some others! And
if it says No Right on Red, you should presume to assume theres a good
reason for the sign being there. Obey ALL stop signs, regardless of the hour. Dont
watch just the car in front of you, look as far down the road as you can--- ANTICIPATEtry
to see if something is developing way up ahead that you might have to avoid. Stay calm!
Dont change more then ONE lane at a time! PLAN AHEAD . You cant
read other drivers minds and they cant read yours! Think about it!
- Yes, I know the previous section has gotten attenuated, but
the propositions it embodies are reasonable and prudent. Consider them carefully and
follow them. And, remember, regarding drivers of other cars: you cant rely
on them to do the right thing! If you are turning, let the turn signal do its job:
dont just let it blink once and assume everyone saw it! You wont burn out the
bulb too soon by letting it blink for 20 seconds or so! Many other drivers have a
tendency to drive stupid, so to paraphrase what the old sergeant used to
say," Be vigilant out there".
- Dont forget [or if youre new to the Club]: We
have a good selection of Regalia available to help you show your fealty to the Club and
your ebullience for your Volvo. For example, Grille Badges made in England; Key Fobs,
Inside & Outside Decals, maybe even Tee shirts. Check with Ray Parsons or Frank
Mackison for availability and prices of the sundry items.
- Our E-mail address is still "VOLVODC@aol.com". The mailbox is checked periodically and replies are sent
ASAP. If you have a classified ad, use "VOLVAMUS@aol.com" only. You will notice that the "URL" for the
Page is in this issue. If you come across a site you think would be of interest to
everyone, e-mail Paul Provencher, da WebMeister, and let him know. He can link us to it so that
everyone can visit. The central section of VOLVAMUS has now been included on the Page,
including the Classifieds!
- Who is Richard Penniman? If you know the answer, e-mail
switzarch@aol.com. Perhaps he is
slightly better known as "Little Richard"
- "Make it yourself, and make it mean something."
Steven Cole Smith, on hot rods, in the October 96 issue of Car & Driver.
- "Si Hoc Legere Scis Nimium Eruditionis
Habes"---found on Tee Shirt.
- Next time you price any new car, consider this: In 1931,
a Bugatti Type 41 Royale Coupe de Ville with body by Henri Binder of Paris sold for
$42,000.00. Try converting that to 1998 dollars, but do it sitting down!
- Got an invitation to attend the VSA General Meeting in
December. Part of the program will be a celebration of Jon Keeblers 15 years as
Editor of their fine publication, SEES. I wont be able to make it, but Im sure
we all would like to offer Jon our Congrats on doing such a fine job. Another 15 years, my
friend! Keep it up!
- Thanks to Paul Provencher for making the necessary
corrections and adding to the Web Page version of VOLVAMUS the fact that he and Jerry Sira
won their respective classes in the Car Show portion of the Volvo
Open House back in early October. Jerry and Darlene for their ever-beautiful 122 Coupe
and Paul and Maria for the pristine V90 wagon. I also, in my nebulous approach to chaos,
forgot to note that Garland Culpeppers son, David, brought his Dads gorgeous
1800ES up to Rockleigh and that the car won its class up at Rockleigh. The car had
been sold, but David was able to get it back into the family. Sorry. My fault. Also want
to mention that Jerry took his 122 over to Sully Plantation on Fathers Day and
garnered a trophy there as well!
- Move news. Still gonna happen, but Ive gotten some
new work which is taking up the time Id thought would be used for packing, etc. So,
it looks like I might be around here for a while longer. No worries.
SPEAKER in November!!!
There shall be no guest speaker in November in order to
concentrate on the business of elections!
ELECTIONS!!
The November Meeting should be devoted to nominations
for Club Officers. The current group of Officers has been in place for several cycles, and
while they have all done splendidly, it is truly time to try and see if new Officers can
be elected. Therefore, I urge as many as possible to attend the November Meeting so that
discussions can take place about potential candidates. For the most part, the
work involved in carrying out the duties of the various offices is not
difficult and most of those serving had never held such posts before. Most importantly,
its fun. After all, as we have said before, this is a hobby-related group; there are
no goings on within it that will bear on the future of the world as we know it. But, we do
have to face up to the fact that some changes are inevitable and, after all, change is
healthy. So, come out and speak up!
Adventure!
On October 24, 1998, I got an e-mail from one Jo Keleher
who was looking for a tan 245 Volvo, 1985 vintage, that could be used in a
shoot for a scene in an NBC show called Lateline, starring Al
Franken. While the show is based in New York City, the story line involved a trip to DC by
Frankens character. I contacted some folks to try and find a suitable 245 and Pat
McNeil at Martens was able to come up with the car. On November 6, the scene was shot down
on Pennsylvania Avenue. Pat has described the scene as Jo explained it to him and it is
quite funny. A customer of Pats, Logan Hysmith, owns the car that was used.
Logans wife, Robin, took the car down for the shoot and all went well according to
our latest reports. I will see if it would be possible to get the airdate and put it in
ASAP.
Departure
Pamm Chaney is stepping down as Membership Chair and
will end her stint at the November meeting. Pamm has done a masterful job of keeping track
of the membership comings and goings; she shall be missed. She has also been an active
participant in many Club events over the years, hopefully, despite her new wheels, she
shall continue to do so in the future. As hinted, she now drives a Honda! Arghh!
Martens Service Clinic

On Saturday, November 7, Martens held their annual Warehouse Sale and
Service Clinic. Jerry Sira, Paul & Teddy Provencher, Alan Marsh and John Switzer,
among others, attended and tried not to get in the way. A good number of Martens clients
took advantage of the invitation to get their car checked, grab free food, scope out new
models, and talk discounts with the parts gurus. It was busy. Jerry brought over the 122
for ogling; it got a good bit of that! I had the 745T washed [thanks, Richard Moak] and
let it sit there looking nasty. So, all in all, a good day. Not sure how many cars went
through, but they did seem busy. A fine program.
