Volvamus Excerpts - January 1999
BITS AND PIECES:
- Dont forget: Stay Right, Pass Left, Buckle Up
and WATCH THOSE MIRRORS! And adjust the mirrors so that you dont have to lean
way over to make sure of what you are seeing and stop watching the road ahead! Be
smooooth! Many drivers dont understand how a merge lane is supposed to be used;
you dont HAVE to stop. Keep your wits about you. Allow a merger in
if you can, it doesnt cost that much time. Stay alert! AWD does NOT
help on black ice! And if it says No Right on Red, you
should presume to assume theres a good reason for the sign being there. Obey ALL
stop signs, regardless of the hour. Dont watch just the car in front of you, look
as far down the road as you can--- ANTICIPATEtry to see if something
is developing way up ahead that you might have to avoid. Stay calm! Dont
change more then ONE lane at a time! PLAN AHEAD . You cant read other
drivers minds and they cant read yours! Think about it!
- Yes, I do know that the previous section has gotten a tad
extended, but the propositions it embodies are reasonable and prudent. Consider them
carefully and follow them. And, remember, regarding drivers of other cars: you cant
rely on them to do the right thing! Many other drivers have a tendency to drive
stupid, so to paraphrase what the old sergeant used to say," Be vigilant out
there".
- Dont forget [or if youre new to the Club]: We
have a good selection of Regalia available to help you show your fealty to the Club and
your ebullience for your Volvo. For example, Grille Badges made in England; Key Fobs,
Inside & Outside Decals, maybe even Tee shirts. Check with Ray Parsons or Frank
Mackison for availability and prices of the sundry items.
- Our E-mail address is still "VOLVODC@aol.com". The mailbox is
checked periodically and replies are sent ASAP. If you have a classified ad, use "VOLVODC@aol.com" only. You will notice
that the "URL" for the Page is in this issue. If you come across a site you
think would be of interest to everyone, e-mail Paul
M. Provencher, da WebMeister, and let him know. He can link us to it so that
everyone can visit. And, of course, if you try an existing link on da Site and
discover that it is gone, let him know. The central section of VOLVAMUS has
now been included on da Page, including the Classifieds!
- Mike Yareck, up in Staten Island, sent along some
Volvo clippings he came across while cleaning up. One is an article from Classic Cars [Dec. 97]
on the 122 series as a potential for restoration. The second clipping is from the October
1997 issue of Bicycling magazine on an annual event held at Mt. Snow. The
particular event in question is called NAKED CRIT! In which participants traverse the
course on their bicycles in the BUFF! What caught Mikes eye is the photo that went
along with the article showing a female contestant, wearing the required helmet and
nothing else, but proudly displaying the word "VOLVO across her rear.
Astounding. Thanks, Mike. Glad to see that there is still a spark of humor out there.
- Martin MotorSport has MOVED over to Alexandria, VA. Check
their display ad in this issue for all the pertinent info. Gary promises that the coffee
machine is still working and that everyone is invited to visit the new shop. No
invitations necessary.
- Have found a new [to me] meaning for BMW.
According to Volvo Turbo owner F. W. Walls of Yorba Linda, Ca. It stands for "Blocking
My Way". Found this gem in the 2/12/96 issue of AutoWeek.
- December 10, 1953? [HINT!] This has NOTHING to do with
VOLVO history.
- Who is Richard Penniman? Well, perhaps he is slightly
better known as "Little Richard"! Only got three responses, from Rich Freeman,
Charlie Vest, and one other whose name escapes me. Apologies extended. Everyone
else has to turn up the volume on his or her local Rock & Roll station!
- Move news. Still gonna happen, but Ive gotten some
new work which is taking up the time Id thought would be used for packing, changing
utilities, and so on. So, it looks like I might be around here for a while longer, at
least until January 1, 1999. Still plan to do Volvamus unless someone would like to
volunteer to take over! Actually, my business and social activities will still be centered
on the DC area, so unless something strange occurs my routine should remain as it has
been. With fax and e-mail, no changes. No worries.
- Switzers new address and telephone number are now on
da Masthead in this issue. [Assuming I had space!] Please correct the appropriate
rolodex device and carry on. 90% of my stuff was there by the
First of January. Balance will go down when I get a break in the work
schedule. Never move unless you absolutely, positively have to! Or to avoid a subpoena!
[Inside the Beltway humor!]
- Youd really enjoy the view from the William
Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge from the flight deck of a Ryder truck. Most
impressive. Where are you?
- My 88 745T passed its most recent Md. required
emissions test with flying colors. You could almost breathe the exhaust! I tried to
compare these results with the first test done in 1996, but they have altered the
standards. The secret is lots of high speed, highway use and the administration of BG
type 44G into the gas once in a while. Remember the old days when you were
advised to take your car out on the highway once in a while and blow out the
carbon? It works!
- Happy to report that Irv Gordon made THE
book! Yes, he and his 1800 are now officially in the GUINNESS Book of World Records for
exceeding 1.6 million miles! WAY TO GO, IRV!!! And we knew him when he only had a paltry
995K on the red beastie. The man sure does love to drive.
- You of the eagle eye will notice that Russ Parise has
taken over as Membership Chair from Pamm Chaney so she can get on with her life.
The transition will be completed by the FIRANDE. So, if
you have older applications in hand, you might consider turning them in. Have heard that Carl
Proza still gets enquiries, so what can you do? Pamm has done a superb job over the
years and we all owe her our thanks!
- Messed up the story about Jon Keebler in the last issue.
Jon is stepping down after 15 years as Editor of S.E.ES, the Volvo Sports America newsletter. Bob
Berglund, President of VSA, will be assuming the duty as of the next issue or so. I do
stand by my thank you and congrats to Jon for a job extremely well
done!
- "A hunch is creativity trying to tell you
something" Frank Capra.
- Our crack investigative reporters are out checking into
an interesting story. It concerns a 1997 V90 wagon that
had a Jag V12 inserted in place of the original Volvo engine! If the story proves
accurate, you heard about it here first. I have seen a photo of the car, but not of the
engine compartment. We are hoping to have a full report by the April 1998 issue of
VOLVAMUS.
Horsepower
There is an article in the December 98 issue of Car & Driver about an
E320 MB that has been converted into a V12 Road Warrior by REENTech, a Mercedes specialty
house based in Florida. The article notes that the V12 developed 480 BHP at the rear
wheels on the DYNO, which led them to an estimate of about 620 BHP at the engine. It
reminded me of the period back in the 1960s when manufacturers would advertise gross
horsepower [like the 620 BHP] rather then the net horsepower [like the 480 BHP]. Ive
heard rumors that car makers would put an engine on a dyno, with no accessories to rob
horsepower, run it up and see just what it would show and then advertise that figure! Even
if it was a flash reading! C&D estimated that there is a 23% loss due to
drivetrain requirements, etc.
Obviously, the net BHP rating is more realistic as to
the possible potential performance, but the gross BHP rating often yields truly exciting
numbers that could inflate expectations. In todays world, the S80 T6 would have been
rated at about 345 BHP under the old system, a vast change from the 268 BHP
that it is rated at. Thinking it over, the new, more accurate system works
best, although bragging potential does make the higher figure more attractive.
An editorial column by Brock Yates in the January 1999
issue of C&D indicates that about 18% of BHP is lost through a manual transmission
drivetrain and about 20% with an automatic transmission drive train [from the gross BHP].
And, to show the power of horsepower,
consider the following. In 1959, a magazine tested a Chrysler 300E with 390 BHP that
weighed over 4500 pounds. It hit 60 mph in about 8.5 seconds. Volvo claims that the new
S40 with the light pressure Turbo will hit 60 mph in about 9.0 seconds and weighs about
2800 pounds. The S80 T6 has 268 BHP, weighs 3700 pounds, and hits 60 mph in about 6.5
seconds. Interesting results.
It is my sad duty to let you know that long time member,
Leon Platky of Edgewater, Maryland, passed away in September 1998 after a brief illness.
Our condolences go out to his wife, Zilpha, and to the rest of the Platky family.
Stickleys Offering
Martin Stickley, our man in London, sent a very funny
clipping from the Sunday Times of 13, December. It is a column by Steve Coogan, entitled
"Midlife Crisis? The Volvo will make you feel better." The subject of the story
is a Volvo V70 R AWD. Two quotes should suffice to give you a sense of the article.
"If Arnold Schwarzenegger was an estate car
hed be this Volvo" and "Also, with the V70 R, you can have your cake and
eat it because not only will it do these normal Volvo things, theyll also show your
average teutonic beast a clean pair of heels." Or this: "A Volvo has always been
built like a brick lavatory. Fortunately, it no longer looks or drives like one.
Crucially, though, it remains unmistakably a Volvo."
Coogan drives [owns] a Ferrari 355, but likes to drive
the Volvo, especially when the weather is wet and windy. It has to do with the heated
seats.
Thanks, Martin, for a slightly different perspective and
analysis of our favorite marque.

BTCC Champs1998
The latest issue of VOLVO DRIVER, the Magazine of the Volvo Club [UK], carried the story of the
TWR-prepared S40 winning the 1998 BTCC Auto Trader RAC championship. Driven by Rickard
Rydell, the S40 was second on September 20 at Silverstone Racepark, enough to clinch the
championship based on points earned over the 25 race series.
This was a fitting end to Volvos five-year
involvement in this very grueling race series. There is little chance that you will see
this achievement touted much in Volvo advertising here in America. The S40/V40 arent
here yet and Volvos image here doesnt revolve around track exploits. But, the
whole operation and the dedication of the team to winning certainly do reflect well on
Volvos history of being competitive in MotorSport. Volvo might be pleased at the
reaction if it brought the race S40 to a major car show or two here in America [HINT!!!]
They might not use the old MG slogan "Safety Fast". But Volvo has certainly
demonstrated that they know what it means!
So, our congratulations to all concerned. We look
forward to reading about the adventures of Mr. Rydell, et al, for years to come. Can you
say repeat?
November 98 DIY by Kevin Capinpin
On Saturday, November 21, 1998, fifteen members
converged on the Martens Service
facility in Bethesda, MD for the last DIY session of 1998. Many thanks to the courteous
and Knowledgeable staff at Martens for assisting us in another successful event. Rick
Dietz shared his technical expertise with everyone, while Richard Moak and Rick Briefs
quickly supplied genuine Volvo parts at a WVC discount. All drew praise for their
helpfulness and patience.
Cars present included the following: Alan Marshs
dependable blue 244; TOM Contis maroon 245; Jim Popes beige 245; Bob
Noes shiny green 245; Constantine Seremetis silver 245T; Chris Reddishs
245; Roger Bakers blue 744; Ruth Butlers maroon 764; and, Frank
Mackisons gold 164. Members were quick to utilize the lifts and actually finished
their projects on time. Projects included: engine oil changes, changing intake manifold
gaskets, changing coolant and hoses, brake work, installing rear overload springs, and
replacing timing belts and engine seals.
Some of the lessons learned: How to bleed brakes; How
care is required when installing front oil sealsDONT push in too far. Jim Pope
learned, "If the engine is idling, spray carb cleaner around the intake manifold. If
idle goes up, theres a vacuum leak."
Tom Conti summed up the success of the DIY program:
"Lets all get out and repair our Volvos! I see no way to improve
these---lets get some more scheduled." Ruth Butler agreed: "Continue to
hold the DIY sessions
.encourage others to participate."
THANKS AGAIN to Martens Volvo for their hospitality and
for enabling us the end the 1998 DIY program on a good note. A special thanks
goes also to Alan Marsh, who has been DIY Coordinator for several years. This years
program included 5 sessions, at Herb
Gordon Volvo, Don Beyer Volvo, and at Martens Volvo. A common comment on how
to improve the DIY program is to get more people involved. If you'd like to help with the
DIY program please let any officer know. With YOUR help, the 1999 edition of the DIY
Program will continue to be a Club highlight.
